Life’s been a bit of a whirlwind lately with placement, Dance Marathon, job interviews and everything else that’s been going on. Hence, the lack of blog posting. However, in the midst of all this chaos and craziness, there have definitely been celebratory moments, times, and people I wish I could put in a bottle to cherish or relive over and over again.
When I first heard the song, “The Dog Days are Over” it was as a ringtone on our friend Kristina’s phone. I had no idea what the lady [Florence] was saying and even when I did manage to figure out the lyrics “The dog days are over, the dog days are done,” I still really didn’t have a clue as to what she meant. The more I listened, the more I understood, and as with most songs, the more I related. Such a powerful and uplifting song, every time I hear it, I am reminded of my fabulous friend Kristina, who over the past couple of months, like most of my DM Executive board, has grown to mean more to me than words can ever even begin to express.
I adore this song for many reasons: the catchiness, the lyrics, the fun rhythm, the person it reminds me of, but most of all, I love “The Dog Days Are Over” because its an anthem and a mantra that I hope and pray Kristina will cling to and declare everyday because she deserves it. Each time as I listen, I think about how true the words are in my own life and then I am reminded that Kristina is a conqueror, she has gone through SO much in the last couple of months, and yet she remains on top of the world. She’s optimistic in a very pessimistic way [:)] and she’s dedicated to perfection. This week her senior show is on exhibition and let me just say that home girl has GOT talent! I want her to create what she has for “the pieces of her”* for Loman and I. I think it’ll look quite interesting since I’m black! HA!
So, Kristina. Accomplished artist. White Chick of the Week. Wedding Planner Extraordinaire. This ones for you. Your dog days are OVER! 🙂
“The Dog Days Are Over”
Happiness hit her like a train on a track
Coming towards her stuck still no turning back
She hid around corners and she hid under beds
She killed it with kisses and from it she fled
With every bubble she sank with her drink
And washed it away down the kitchen sink
The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run
Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your longing behind
You cant carry it with you if you want to survive
And I never wanted anything from you
Except everything you had and what was left after that too, oh
Happiness hit her like a bullet in the head
Struck from a great height by someone who should know better than that
Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father
Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your loving, your loving behind
You cant carry it with you if you want to survive
The dog days are over
The dog days are done
The horses are coming
So you better run
Love this, the show, the art, the song and that the dog days are over!
